Mayfield Students Win Medals in Science Olympiad Competition

Four teams earn first-place honors

Mayfield City School District's fifth- and sixth-grade Science Olympiad Team won several medals at the regional tournament at Cleveland State University.

Competing against 15 other schools, four teams earned first place: Jacob Baraz and Leslie Brown for "Amphibians & Reptiles"; Alex Rollins and Bradley Moyer for "Write It, Do It"; Lily Liu, Surya Gopal, Michael Zhou and Michael Graziano for "Science Bowl"; and Sabrina Ho and Surya Gopal for "'A' is for Anatomy."

Winning second place were the teams of Michael Graziano and Dhimirti Lako for "Circuit Wizardry"; Tiegan Lorkovich and Alex You for "Mystery Powders"; and Austin Bean, Tommy Grieshammer and Jacob Holfeltz for "Reflection Relay."

Third-place winners were Sabrina Ho and Lakshi Mittal for "Starry, Starry Night" and Mark Abdelmalak and Surya Gopal for "Simple Machines." Michael Zhou and Illya Yatsishin earned fourth place for "Experimental Design."

Other Science Olympiad Team members who contributed were Kyle Grampp, Samantha Tam, Polina Yagusevich, Nishant Murali, Macie Snider, Ani Vijayshankar and Meghan Yeager.

They are coached by staff members Sandy Bean, Noreen DiBarto, Theresa Dutton, Dave Ehrbar, Eileen Gaston, Vicki McGarry, Lisa Jenkins, Darcy Klimkowski, Mike Kuenzel, Rae Malenda, Desiree Demian, John Reilly, Elizabeth Scully and Mary Jane Tomaselli. Parent volunteer Lynn Rollins and Rockwell employee volunteer Dan Galdun are also coaches.
