Mayfield Village Civic Center Tower to Get New Look

Spire will be more village hall, less church in appearance

officials set aside $175,000 for repairs to the Civic Center roof. When that cost came in at $96,000, that left enough money for work on the main tower.

"That left me an opening to take care of the spire. That's something we wanted to do five years ago," Building Commissioner John Marrelli said.

The village purchased the building, which had served as Mayfield United Methodist Church, in 1999.

"When we bought this building there was a cross on top and a different cupola in front (on the east side of the building). We had to get that one done because it was leaking," Marrelli said.

Frost Building Maintenance was hired for $37,785 to remove, rebuild and reinstall the cupola on the main tower. The pointed spire will be lowered and the base altered to reflect what was done on the east side of the building.

Instead of a smaller, octagon shape, it will be large and square. Marrelli said that will create a more stately appearance versus the current church look.

"If we can get the shingles and cupola done this fall, we're done with the top end of this building, finally," Marrelli said.

Boak and Sons will do the roof work and submitted a base bid of $72,385. Councilman Joseph Saponaro said an upgrade in materials and an $18,000 contingency in case there are framing issues raised the potential expense to $96,000.
