Mayfield Village Introduces Three New Firefighters

For the first time in 30 years, the Mayfield Village Fire Department has expanded its full-time manpower.

The department announced the hires of firefighters Mike Palumbo, Steve Conti and Jason Brothers this week. The men have been assigned to the A, B, and C shifts, respectively, according to the department's Facebook page.

Before their hires, the village staffed two full-time firefighters and two part-timers each day, Interim Fire Chief Eugene Carcioppolo said. Now, there are three full-timers each day, along with one part-time worker.

Carcioppolo said the hires are about preparing for future. Five firefighters are expected to retire in the next five years.

"(The hirings are about) Continuity, succession planning because we have a relatively old work force," he said. "We can bring in new people and get them trained so there's not a lapse in training and experience."

All three of the new firefighters were previously employed part-time with the village. Conti previously worked full-time for Parma, Columbo for Bay Village and Brothers was with Cleveland Hopkins International Airport's fire department.

All three are represented by International Association of Firefighters Local 2619. Mayfield Village now has nine full-time firefighters and about 20 part-timers.
