Mayfield Village Offers Smoke Alarm Purchase Program

Residents can buy a First Alert photoelectric unit for $22

residents can take advantage of a village purchase program to buy smoke alarms for $22 each. There is also a buy two, get one free deal – limited to one free alarm per household.

Lt. Mike Girbino of the Mayfield Village Fire Department said the First Alert OneLink photoelectric smoke alarm being offered is difficult to find locally and costs from $35 to $75 online.

Girbino said he recommends the unit, which runs on AA batteries and has a voice alarm.

"I have eight in my home," he said. "This is a superior device because it offers wireless interconnection. I really believe this is the best protection out there for the money."

He said that if you have multiple alarms, all of them will sound when one is triggered.

"The whole idea is to give you as much time as possible to evacuate," Girbino said.

Girbino recommended that residents have one smoke alarm in each sleeping area and one in the hallway outside of the sleeping area. He also recommends a smoke alarm on every other level of the home, including the basement.

"The average home could use five or six smoke alarms," Girbino said.

Information about the smoke alarm purchase program will be included in the next Voice of the Village and a letter will be sent to residents giving them the opportunity to order alarms.
