Mayfield Village Seeks State Grant for Sewer Project

Work is part of program for remaining streets with septic tanks

will apply for state Issue 2 grant funds for sanitary sewers on some of the remaining streets with septic tanks.

At Monday's meeting, council authorized Mayor Bruce Rinker to proceed with the grant application for a $2 million sewer project on Eastgate and Meadowood drives. That is phase one of a program that will also cover Ravine and Thornapple drives and Robley Lane. The total program is estimated to cost between $4 million and $5 million.

Village Development Director Ted Esborn said the state made $16 million in Issue 2 funds available in Cuyahoga County, which will administer the grants pending state final approval.

"This is the first time we've applied since 2007," Esborn said.

Grant applications are due by Sept. 30. Esborn said village officials have to decide how much of the $2 million to seek in a grant. The state also offers a zero-interest loan program, so the application can be split between the two types of funding in addition to the village's contribution.

Esborn said the percentage sought in grant funds is part of the criteria used to assign points and rank applications. Other factors include needs of the district, infrastructure age and condition, health/safety need and regional collaboration.

A decision on grants is expected in November. If the application is approved, a grant agreement will be signed next summer, Esborn said.
