Mayfield Village Smoke Alarm Purchase Program Gets Good Response

There were 634 smoke alarms purchased

smoke alarm purchase program was so popular that residents can expect to see it offered again.

"We'd like to see that become a yearly event around fire prevention week," Fire Chief David Mohr said at Monday's Village Council meeting.

There were 166 households that bought 634 alarms through the program. Cost was $22 each for the First Alert One Link photoelectric alarm, which is difficult to find locally and normally costs $35 to $75 online, according to Lt. Mike Girbino of the Mayfield Village Fire Department.

The village also offered a buy two, get one free deal which ended up costing $3,652. But village officials said it was more important to get more smoke alarms into households.

"It potentially saved a lot of lives," Councilman Joseph Saponaro said of the program.

Girbino recommends photoelectric smoke alarms over ionization alarms because they are less prone to nuisance alarms and provide quick response to slow-burning fires that produce a lot of smoke and fast-growing fires with high heat.
