Pinwheels Placed to Prevent Child Abuse

Mayfield Women's Club says each pinwheel represents the bright future every child deserves.

The pinwheels sitting at the intersection of SOM Center and Wilson Mills roads can't cry for help, but an area group still hopes they will help people visualize millions of abused children throughout the nation.

Members of the Mayfield Women's Club planted them in front of the Mayfield Village gazebo with a simple message — April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

"The pinwheels are supposed to represent the kids who have been abused, and hopefully this can be curbed in some way," said Anastasia McCullogh, who sits on the Women's Club board. "We hope the pinwheels remind people of the bright future that children deserve."

The pinwheel planting is part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs' nationwide initiative, which includes the placement of pinwheels across the country. The 44-member Mayfield group will keep them up until the month ends next week. McCullogh said she appreciated the support of Mayor Bruce Rinker, and his willingness to let the women display the pinwheels.

"Hopefully people will make that connection," she said. "Just be aware that this goes on and needs to stop."
