Police Blotter: Gas Company Scam is Making the Rounds

A Commonwealth Avenue woman said at 6:14 p.m. Nov. 18 that someone called her claiming to be with the gas company. The person said a meter reader would be coming the next day and needed to get inside, which the resident said isn't necessary because the meter is outside. A dispatcher called the phone number the resident had been given and a recorded message said the number is no longer in service.
The gas company scam was tried at 4:55 p.m. Nov. 17 on a Crestwood Road man. His daughter called police and said someone claiming to be from the gas company said they needed to get in the house the next day to read the meter. She also said the meter is outside. She called the gas company and they said no one was scheduled to go to the area.
A woman called police at 11:51 a.m. Nov. 19 after her daughter got out of the car and ran into the woods at Acacia Park Cemetery on SOM Center Road. She called back and said her daughter returned to the car.
A Gates Mills Boulevard resident called at 10:44 a.m. Nov. 19 to complain that a neighbor puts his leaves on the caller's lawn. Police said the leaves were on the neighbor's property, but he moved then further back to avoid any problems.
A caller wanted police to check on the welfare of a 7-year-old boy left in a running car at 6:01 p.m. Nov. 18 at Eastgate. The caller confronted the woman driving the Mercedes and was told that she was late for a hockey game and was an adult and can do what she wants. Police said the car belonged to a Chagrin Falls resident and the woman got on Interstate 90 northbound before police arrived.
A Rosebury Court man called at 3:24 p.m. Nov. 17 after getting a scam call from someone in Jamaica. He was told to go to Walmart for a stamp to send back a receipt of his winnings. The caller hung up, but was concerned that someone was trying to get him to leave his house.
