Police Blotter: Man Told that Claiming 'Prize' Would Be Costly

An East Miner Road man told police on Sept. 15 that he was called by someone claiming to be from Reader's Digest who said he won $2.1 million and a new car. The caller wanted the man to call back within 30 minutes to a number in the 876 area code. Police told him not to call and said it was a scam with certain area codes charging a high amount to the phone bill.

An officer was out with a man changing a flat tire at 2:52 a.m. Sept. 19 on Interstate 271 and the man wasn't feeling well. The man called the police station to complain that officers on the scene weren't letting him get his things out of the car. Police gave the man and his passenger a ride home to Marsol Road and took the man's car to the Walmart parking lot.

A woman said a suspicious man was in a neighbor's back yard at 9:23 p.m. Sept. 18 on Mayflower Avenue. She said the man had a flashlight and might be wearing a ghost suit. Police checked and said there was no cause for alarm – the caller saw someone's window from across a field.

A man who had been kicked out of a Mayfield Road bar for fighting was hanging out in the parking lot at 1:38 a.m. Sept. 19. Police talked to the man, who was making a phone call to get a ride home.

A woman called police at 6:05 p.m. Sept. 17 and said nurses at Hillcrest Hospital were not helping her. Police said the woman had refused treatment from a nurse and walked out. An officer went back into the hospital with the woman and assisted her with registration.

A Commonwealth Avenue woman told police at 9:22 a.m. Sept. 17 that she was called by a person claiming to be with a consulting company and wanting her personal information regarding a claim filed for damage to a neighbor's home during a recent storm. The neighbors told her they didn't file any claims.

An Iroquois Avenue woman reported at 8:22 p.m. Sept. 16 that a strongbox containing jewelry had been hidden in her attic and was missing. Also, her daughter was missing money from her purse.

A caller at 12:51 p.m. Sept. 16 said it appeared that a homeless woman might be living in a garage at a Mayfield Road apartment building. The woman left before police arrived.
