Senate Passes Grendell Co-Sponsored Bill on American History Education
Legislation mandates study of documents created by Founding Fathers

State Sen. Tim Grendell, R-18, announced that Senate Bill 165 passed the Ohio Senate. It requires the State Board of Education to modify high school American history and government curriculum to include a study of the original text and historical context of the Declaration of Independence, the Northwest Ordinance, the Constitution of the United States and the Ohio Constitution.
Grendell, who is lead co-sponsor of the bill, said it addresses a Fordham Foundation report that rated American history education in Ohio a "D."
"Working with Sen. Larry Obhof, SB 165 seeks to correct this lack of knowledge about our country and its important historical documents. This legislation will ensure that Ohio students read the Declaration of Independence, the Northwest Ordinance and the Constitution of the United States with an emphasis on the Bill of Rights, the Ohio Constitution and the Federalist Papers."
