UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital Receives Largest Gift in its History

Pediatric cancer institute named in honor of Angie Fowler

A Lyndhurst couple has donated $17 million to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital – the largest gift the facility has ever received. The donation was announced Tuesday at the Gates Mills home of Jackie and Fred Rothstein, M.D.

"It really is a transformative gift," said Mike Farrell, president of Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. "This will transform our program for young adults and children."

In honor of the gift from Chuck and Char Fowler, the entire pediatric cancer program will be named the Angie Fowler Child and Young Adult Cancer Institute. Angie Fowler, their daughter, was a cancer patient and passed away 25 years ago, Farrell said.

"We've never had a name for the program," he added.

Farrell said the donation will help efforts to enhance the cancer program for young adults ages 13 to 25.

"They don't get diagnosed early enough for clinical studies," Farrell said. He said the money will help create a center to address that situation.
