Walsh University Students Celebrate MLK Holiday With a Day of Service Jan. 16

Students from Walsh University will commemorate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. on January 16 with a day of service to the community. This year Walsh will be working with three community partners who address topics of education, homelessness, and elderly care.

The group will meet at 1 pm in the David Center on the campus of Walsh University. They plan to depart campus for their service sites by 1:15 pm, returning by 5 pm for pizza and reflection.

“Dr. King and ‘The Dream’ are about more than just the Civil Rights Movement,” noted Shaddrick Stinson, director of Multicultural Affairs for Walsh University.  “It embodied the spirit of commitment. Part of the mission here at Walsh is based in our commitment, to God, each other, and our surrounding community as well. This day of service is our way of honoring Dr. King, ‘The Dream’ and Walsh’s commitment to the community.”

“Students comment about their experience and most often express having fun while making a difference in the community,” added Beth Juelich-Velotta, director of service learning. “Some say that they learned about a particular organization for the first time and desire to return and carry the important work forward. In general, they come back to campus after serving with full hearts and minds.”
