Two Officers Promoted Before North Canton Council Meeting

All eyes were on Patrolman Chad E. Marceric and Sgt. Douglas A. Cardwell before Monday night's meeting

Friends and family of Chad E. Marceric and Douglas A. Cardwell filled the North Canton City Council Chambers Monday night as they watched the two men accept promotions with the .

Cardwell, a 13-year veteran with the force, was promoted to the position of sergeant, while Marceric, a part-time patrolman for two years, was promoted to a full-time officer.

Cardwell's promotion fits into a restructuring plan that brings the department to five sergeants and one lieutenant and .

Here's a rundown of more Council highlights from Monday:

  • Council President Jon Snyder announced an upcoming public meeting to discuss the uptick in crimes in the Everhard Road/Westfield Avenue area. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. May 8. Snyder said representatives from the Stark County Prosecutor's Office and city administration will be at the meeting, as well as Lt. Stan Strausser of the North Canton Police Department. The meeting will focus on ways to be proactive against crime.
  • Councilman Doug Foltz said Dogwood Pool may open Memorial Day weekend, depending on the weather.
  • Council passed an ordinance that would require property owners to , or otherwise face a fine.

    "This is the first step of many," said Councilman-at-large Dan Griffith, who worked with others on a Special Housing Review Committee to craft the ordinance. He said the committee hopes to focus next on legislation that would give Permits and Inspection Superintendent Eric Bowles more authority in the tearing down of problematic houses.
  • Council members said U.S. Rep Jim Renacci is expected to speak at the May 14 Council meeting. Flooding within the city will be one of the discussion topics. Renacci had just earlier this month for the "Meet Your Congressman" Breakfast at Kent State University's Stark Campus.
  • Council passed an ordinance that would allow the city to spend $118,000 on the purchase and upgrade of dispatching and records management equipment for theΒ .
  • Mayor David Held announced the State of the City address will take place at 7 p.m. May 9 at .
  • Council made its way through the night's agenda (shown in the PDFs section of this update).
  • Council will not meet Monday, as it's the fifth Monday of the month. Its next meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 7.
