The Iraq War, 10 Years of Casualties: North Canton Feels its Touch

Commemorating those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion ofΒ IraqΒ began 10 years ago this week -- on March 19, 2003 -- and although officially "over," fighting continues with discouraging persistence.

By one count, theΒ war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to theΒ IraqΒ Coalition Casualty Count, including 187 Ohioans.

  • Lance Cpl.Β Stacy Ann Dryden, 22. Died of injuries sustained in a non-hostile incident Al Asad, Iraq, on October 19, 2008.
  • Staff Sgt.Β Matthew Joseph Kuglics, 25.Β One of two airmen killed when their vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb in Kirkuk, Iraq, on June 5, 2007.
