WATCH: Workers Advocate for Local Jobs Outside Outback, Bonefish Restaurants

Local jobs for local workers. It doesn't seem that far-fetched an idea to the trade workers who were picketing at The Strip Wednesday.

Dave Kirven, a North Canton resident and business agent with the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 94, said Stark County construction jobs are going to workers from Cleveland, Medina and even outside the state, like Kentucky. And the newly constructed Bonefish Grill and Outback Steakhouse aren't an exception.

Kirven joined a handful of others at The Strip that day to advocate for local jobs for local workers. It was the sixth or seventh (and final) demonstation at the construction site, he said.

Those outside workers, he said, aren't going to come back and support the Stark County community.

"All of our money is spent here," Kirven said. "We're not taking it out into someone else's community. We're buying groceries, gas, going to local restaurants, buying everything local, paying taxes here, support our local schools."

He said local workers aren't even given a chance to bid on construction jobs in some cases.

"The problem is, they don't come to us early enough. By the time we find out, the contracts are out — they're signed. So we don't have a chance to get the work," Kirven said. "All we're asking for is give us a chance up front. We can be competitive in this work if they let us."

North Canton Patch also talked to , who showed up at the demonstration Wednesday. She said it was her third time advocating with the trade workers there.
