Council Approves RTA Project at Warrensville Center & Shaker

RTA plans on constructing two new shelters and pedestrian crossings at the rapid stop

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit System can move forward with a new station construction project in the city, thanks to approval from city council.

The governing body on Monday approved the RTA's plan to construct a new station at the Warrensville Center Road-Shaker Boulevard rapid transit stop.

The plan includes two new shelters, a larger platform, better pedestrian crossings, signage and lighting. The city passed the ordinance as an emergency in order to help the RTA finalize its plans and begin a bidding process.

The planning department originally approved RTA's plans for new walkways in 2010, planning director Joyce Braverman said. However, the old stairway was demolished this year. Because of the lag time, Braverman suggested that council request a definite schedule this time around.

In response, Shaker Heights councilwoman Nancy Moore motioned to amend the approval to include a schedule request. Council unanimously approved that motion.

"I'd like to know when they're going to begin and when they're going to end," Moore said. "Otherwise, we could be waiting two years from now."
