Daleford Fire: Jance Reynolds, Daughter Mary Paige Killed; Memorial Fund Established

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has released the names of two who died in a Shaker Heights house fire Tuesday.

Jance Reynolds, 62, and his daughter Mary Paige, 18, died of smoke inhalation in the fire that broke just before 4 a.m. at 3333 Daleford Road.

Five others escaped and were transported to Ahuja Medical Center, and two firefighters were also injured and transported to Ahuja. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Neighbors have also set up a fund to help the family, they said.

Though many neighbors said that they did not know the family well, those who did said that the family was friendly.

A Shaker Heights certificate of occupancy issued on Oct. 26 indicates that the Reynolds family began renting the Daleford home less than two months ago, Shaker Heights Housing Inspection Director Bill Hanson said.

Before the move to Daleford Road, the Reynolds lived on Shelburne Road in Shaker Heights, where neighbor Bob Brown said Mary Paige would often play with his kids.

"I think I remember this little girl who was kind of in a world of her own and yet she was always out when the kids were playing," said Brown.

Brown, who has lived in his Shelburne home since before the Reynolds moved there, called Jance a good dad.

"I think [Jance and his wife] were both very kind people and they were very loving. Jance loved his family and loved his children, and I think, like many parents of children with special needs, he loved Mary Paige in a very special way."

Jance Reynolds, who was a jewelry manager at Beachwood Place Mall’s Saks Fifth Avenue, appeared on WKYC’s Good Morning Cleveland in March to promote a new product line.

Jance Reynolds was an active member of the church, and one source said he stepped up to lead the youth ministry after the youth pastor was laid off. Tweets posted on Tuesday morning by Shaker Heights students referred to the man as “Uncle Jance” and a “mentor.”
