The band dedicated the show to the memory of former mayor Patricia S. Mearns
Whether they sat attentively in lawn chairs, sprawled out on blankets or played fetch with a dog, Shaker Heights residents were treated to a Summer soundtrack Wednesday night.
The Shaker Heights Community Band put on its annual summer concert at the Community Colonnade at the corner of Van Aken Boulevard and Lee Road. Led by conductor Luiz F. Coelho, the 50-member band wowed a large outdoor crowd with woodwinds, percussion and brass. The musicians played a blend of patriotic songs like "America, the Beautiful" and the movie themes from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Its fourth selection was "Dedicatory Letter," a world premier of a composition by graduate Gabriel Rothman. He wrote it to express his love for the city during its centennial anniversary.
