No. 3 Top Story of 2012: Fireworks Arrests

This was the third most-read story on Shaker Heights Patch this year

For the third consecutive year, the Shaker Heights Police Department dealt with a large-scale distrubance at its Fourth of July fireworks celebration.

This year, nine were arrested for disorderly conduct near the celebration outside of Shaker Heights Middle School. The arrests made for the third most-read story on Shaker Heights Patch this year.

(Editor's note: Police originally reported that eight people were arrested at the event)

"Unfortunately, that's what undermines these kinds of events," Police Chief D. Scott Lee said at the time. "It's a shame."

None of the individuals arrested that night were Shaker residents. The city's government has since decided not to host the event in 2013.

"The risk associated with Independence Day fireworks outweighs the benefit of the community," Lee said earlier this month. "For the safety of our residents, their guests and our safety forces, it is my recommendation that the city no longer sponsor this event.

"It's unfortunate, but it's come to that."
