Shaker Community Life Department Changes Name
The department that offers sports, childcare and senior services is now the Recreation Department

Editor's note: Shaker Heights City Council's first meeting of 2013 is on Jan. 14. Until then, we'll revisit some of the legislation passed at the most recent gathering in December.
The department in Shaker that offers recreation activities and facilities has decided to go by a new name.
What has been known as the Shaker Heights Community Life Department is now simply the Recreation Department. The decision was agreed upon by Shaker Heights City Council in December.

Chief Administrative Officer Jeri E. Chaikin recommended the change, stating that "it is not unusual for residents to be confused about exactly what is included in Community Life."
The department offers childcare, sports, senior services and more. Its facilities are Thornton Park and the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Building.

Council passed the ordinance on the first reading so the city could begin using the Recreation Department title on its website and in brochures.
