Shaker Heights Students Recognized at National History Day

Six students earned awards in Maryland for their interpretations of historical topics

Six students received recognition in June at National History Day at the University of Maryland at College Park. The awards were given for the students' creative interpretation of historical topics.

Nearly 700,000 students participate in National History Day each year. The award winners from Shaker were:

  • Junior Naomi Hill won second place in the Individual Documentary category for Legacy of the White Rose.
  • Juniors Kate Connors, Ella Schneiberg, Leighah Scully, and Lauren Woyczynski received seventh-place recognition in the Group Exhibit category for Artistic Revolution, Cultural Renewal: The Vienna Secession.
  • Sophomore Mario Belfiglio claimed 13th place in Individual Exhibit for Hetch-Hetchy: Dam It or Damn It! Mario also received a “Salute to Freedom Award,” given by the National World War II Museum. Only one student from each state won such an award. Winners are invited to represent their state at the grand opening celebration of the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center in 2013.

Shaker students also took home several awards in May at the state competition in Columbus.
