Baby Born On Side Of U.S. 422 On New Year's Day

Solon firefighters and medics helped deliver a baby girl on the morning of New Year's Day. What a way to start 2022.

SOLON, OH — Before the sun fully rose on New Year's Day, Solon firefighters and medics had delivered a baby on the berm of U.S. 422.

At 5:15 a.m. on Jan. 1, emergency crews were told a woman was possibly in labor on the highway. Her water had broken and her contractions were less than two minutes apart, according to a social media post from Solon Fire.

The woman was being driven to a hospital by her brother, but he pulled over when her water broke.

When firefighters and medics arrived, the woman was in the backseat of the car. She was evaluated and crews decided to move her to the ambulance. They loaded her onto a cot and began moving her...when she gave birth to a baby girl.

According to Solon Fire, the baby was born within three minutes of firefighters and medics arriving on the scene. The baby came into the world on the side of U.S. 422, with traffic passing by.

"The baby’s name is “Summer” and she and her mother were both safely transported to the Labor and Delivery unit at Hillcrest Hospital," the fire department said in a social media post. "Congratulations to Lt Jason Schilkowski, FF/PM Michael Echle, FF/PM Jeff Barker and FF/PM Steve Prelock on a job well done."
