CHAGRIN FALLS, OH — State Sen. Matt Dolan announced his campaign to be the next senator from Ohio on Monday.

Dolan will look to replace Sen. Rob Portman, who will not seek re-election. The field to replace Portman already includes the likes of former Ohio treasurer Josh Mandel, author J.D. Vance and Ohio Republic Party Chairwoman Jane Timken, among others.

“After meeting with Republicans, conservative activists and community leaders across Ohio in recent weeks, it’s clear that the focus of the race for U.S. Senate has yet to be about our people, our interests, and our beloved state. This changes today with the announcement of my candidacy for U.S. Senate," Dolan said in a statement.

While Portman blamed political gridlock and increasing partisanship for forcing him out of his role as senator, Dolan and many others looking to replace Portman have indicated they will move right of his current agenda.

Dolan said he would oppose the agenda of President Joe Biden and other Democrats, including Sen. Chuck Schumer and fellow Ohioan, Rep. Tim Ryan. He also hinted that America's long-held liberties could be at stake in the election.

“We live in an indispensable and exceptional nation. One in which freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. With the courage of my convictions, clarity of purpose and a resolute focus on the real challenges facing our beloved state, I am ready to lead," Dolan said.
