The Emotional Stages of Going Back to School

Denial.

1. What is this “back to school” concept of which you speak?
2. I have all the time in the world. I am the king of the summer and the pool is my fortress.
3. Seriously, why are they sending me these class notices?
4. School is an metaphysical concept. It’s only real if you make it real.
5. No, Mom, I’m not going to go shopping for supplies because SUMMER WILL LAST FOREVER, OKAY?

Panic.

6. *sobs in the corner clutching a beach towel*
7. Maybe if I chain myself to the pool’s guard rail they won’t be able to get me back to school.
8. Or I can just move to Mexico. They can’t make me take algebra if I’m in Cancun, right?
9. Crap, I don’t have a passport.
10. *googles expedited passport services*

Acceptance.

11. Okay, maybe I can survive this.
12. It’s just school. I’ve done this every other year, too.
13. And that new biology teacher who gives candy out on Wednesdays seems alright.
14. Deep breaths. I did have a great vacation, after all.
15. Wait, do I get new stuff out of this?

Excitement.

16. OMG NEW STUFF!!!!
17. And I get to see my friends all the time now, too. Along with my NEW STUFF.
18. I need all these pens, and all those pencils, and 80 of these notebooks…
19. Dad, will you get my stylist on the phone and have him send over Tom Ford’s newest collection?
20. Okay, so I don’t have a stylist. Fine, I’ll come with you to Target.

21. YES. My locker is right next to the cafeteria.
22. Class schedule = on point.
23. I pretty much run this school.
24. Now, how do I sneak into the teacher’s lounge?
