Solon Firefighters Respond to Fire in Twinsburg

Only one person suffered a minor injury during a major fire that broke out earlier today at on Midway Drive, according to the

“We had one person who was slightly injured,” said Lynn Racine, the fire department's public information officer at the blaze. “He was assessed at the scene and he signed off and did not want a transport.”

No one is sure how the fire started at the metal recycling plant on 2050 Midway Drive, shortly before noon. Captain Don Simon said crews were battling the fire from the inside when the roof began to collapse and they were forced to pull out.

“It’s all metals, and if anyone knows anything about metals: Dust, aluminum, magnesium; once it gets going, it’s hard to put it out,” said Captain Don Simon.

Crews from many area departments have been working on the blaze for several hours, but according to Racine, it could take a couple more hours to completely quench the fire.

“At this point we’re trying to get through all of the layers of the collapse,” Racine said. 

Racine said a severe thunderstorm coming through the area could provide a little help.

The electric company turned off power to Decco and the surrounding buildings, but it doesn’t appear any other businesses were affected by the fire.
