Solon Police: Man Tries Fake Stolen Car Scheme, Fails

The information in this report is from the Solon Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A Glenwillow man thought he came up with the perfect scheme to get out of driving his car into a garage in Solon and running away from the cops.

On Dec. 31, a officer went to pull over a Honda because the license plate lights were burned out and a search of the plate found that the car owner had an active arrest warrant.

Instead of pulling over, the driver pulled into a driveway on Bainbridge Road, where he dived from the moving car and ran off. The car proceeded into the garage, damaging it.

Solon Police deployed Stryker, the police dog, to hunt for the man. But it turns out that wasn't needed.

That's because the man decided to call police to report his car was stolen.

The man told police he was in Kent, but the GPS coordinates of the cell phone showed he was on Bainbridge Road.

Police arrested Darrell A. Spencer, 23, of Glenwillow, and charged him with failure to comply, driving under suspension, no rear license plate lights and criminal damaging.
