RESOLUTIONΒ
WHEREAS, Ohio, and the rest ofthe World, lost a true American heroΒ on August 25, 2012 with the passing of Neil Armstrong; andΒ
WHEREAS, Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta,Β Ohio, the piace Where he developed his love for flying by taking flying lessons atΒ the county airport - Where at just 15 years old, before he had a driverβs license,Β Armstrong earned his flight eertiΓ±cate; andΒ
WHEREAS, Armstrong was a decorated naval aviator, receiving the AirΒ Medal for combat missions, a Gold Star, and the Korean Service Medal andΒ
Engagement Stal'I all before leaving active duty Naval service at the age of 22; and IΒ
WHEREAS, after serving as a naval aviator from 1949-1952,Β Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Β inΒ 1955. His first assignment was with the NACA Lewis Research Center inΒ Cleveland (now NASA Glenn), followed by assignments over the next 17 yearsΒ as an engineer, test pilot, astronaut and an administrator for NACA, and itsΒ successor agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NAS/X);Β and Β
WHEREAS, Armstrong was the spacecraft commander for Apollo ll,Β the first manned lunar landing mission, and informed Mission Control, "Houston,Β Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landoclβ; andΒ
WHEREAS, on July 21, 1969, Armstrollg gained the distinction ofΒ
Y being the first manto land a craft on the moon and the Β to step on its surface,Β
he exclaimed upon exiting the spacecraft, "Thatβs one small step for [a] man, oneΒ giant leap for mankind.βΒ
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John R. Kasich, Governor ofΒ the State Of Ohio, do hereby honor the memory ofΒ
NEIL A, ARMSTRONGΒ
throughout Ohio and I join all Ohioans in remembering this brave OhioΒ pioneer. May God bless Neil Armstrong and his family. IΒ
