City Changes Limitations to Senior Snow Plow Program

Applications for Twinsburg's senior snow plow program will be accepted until Nov. 30

Sure the weather is sunny and beautiful now. But we all know that in Ohio, it can get bitter cold and snowy in a hurry. So it’s never too soon to think about how the driveway will get plowed this winter.

Every year the city offers a senior snow plow program for elderly residents that have no one to clear their driveways for them. However, there will be a few changes this year, that Laura Seifer, senior recreations coordinator, says will help the city be more effective.

Twinsburg is currently accepting applications for the service, to make a deadline of November 30. Seifer said in previous years, residents were calling them with requests after the plowing schedule was set, creating scheduling problems.

“To have people call in the middle of December, first part of January, and get added to the list, all of our schedules get discombobulated,” Siefer said. Creating the deadline will help the city be better organized and use its time and equipment more efficiently, she said.

The city has also changed its approach to plowing gravel driveways. Each resident must sign, as part of the agreement, that they understand gravel will be displaced during plowing and the city will not repair or replace any gravel strewn about the yard.

“We get calls numerous times in the spring, ‘Well, they plowed my driveway but all the gravel is in my grass. When are you coming out to get the gravel out of my grass?’” Seifer said. A guideline was also added to notify applicants that the city is not responsible for salting driveways.

To qualify for the program residents must be 65 or older or physcially or mentally handicapped, with no able-bodied person under that age living at the residence, and not belong to a homeowners association. Physically and mentally handicapped residents also must have an annual net income less than $15,000 to qualify.
