Relay for Life Planning Starts Tonight at Mavis Winkles

The Twinsburg/Nordonia Relay for Life will have its first organizational meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m.

As the ink dries on the numbers for Relay For Life of 2011 volunteers are already working on the 2012 American Cancer Society Relay For Life – complete with a name change.

The event, to be held at the Twinsburg Tiger Stadium Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2, 2012, will be known as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Twinsburg/Nordonia, to better reflect the participation from the collaborating communities.

The community is invited to the next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at to hear about the goals for the 2012 event, get a taste of the spirit of relay and learn how easy it is to join or start a team.  The 2012 Steering committee will meet following all community meetings.

2012 Relay For Life chair Rob Felber and other volunteers are already rallying friends, coworkers, community members and businesses to form teams and consider contributing their talents to make the event a success.

“We were thrilled to have raised nearly $80,000 in 2011,” said Felber, who already has increased the fund raising goal to $85,000 and the team recruitment goal from last year’s 36 to over 50 teams.  “Teams are already signing up and many of the steering committee is in place. Much help is still needed to run this 1,000 person event however. From logistics and activities and everything in between, we have something for everyone. Whether your specialty is lining up food donations, planning youth events or plotting out campsites.  Relay gets inside you - It’s a great way for your community to take up the fight against cancer and make friends for a lifetime.”

Additional planning meetings are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14 – also at Mavis Winkle’s, which last year donated roughly $300 in sales to the event through Relay Wednesday’s dinning program.
