WEWS: Township Animal Shelter Seeking Donations After Hoarding Case
Close to 100 animals were removed from a Summit County home Friday and taken to the shelter
The Pawsibilities Humane Society of Greater Akron in Twinsburg Township needs your help.
In a case of animal hoarding, close to 100 animals were seized from a Jarvis Road home in Coventry Township on Friday. The animals were taken to the shelter, which is now over capacity, according to News Channel 5.
Shelter Executive Director Karen Hackenberry said authorities rescued 43 dogs, 25 birds, several cats, rabbits, ferrets and an iguana from the home. However, because the investigation is ongoing, she wouldn't comment on the conditions in which the animals were kept, said Channel 5.

βAround 200 to 250 animals is pretty much capacity for us, so when you add another hundred to the 225 we already had, it is a strain,β Hackenberry told Channel 5. βThe average cost to take care of a dog that spends one month in our shelter is about $425 if you include the medical intake, the spay and neuter and just the care and feeding on a daily basis. Itβs a little less for a cat, but not much."
The hoarded animals are not up for adoption yet, and are being kept until the investigation is complete. Local veterinarians are helping take care of the animals, Hackenberry told the news channel.
