Grandpa Ripped Off in Bail Scam

The following arrest information was provided by the Westlake Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Westlake grandfather became the victim of the "I'm in jail" phone scam on May 25.

He received a phone call from a "grandson" who claimed to be in jail and needed bond money sent to Peru via Western Union. His grandson wasn't under arrest in Peru or anywhere else.

The grandfather lost $2,962 in three transactions.

Another Westlake grandfather avoided a similar fate when, just after wiring $1,900 to Mexico City to bail out his grandson on May 26, the real grandson called him and the jig was up. He was able to stop the transaction and didn't lose any money.
