20-Car Crash Injures 9 People In Umatilla County

Speed and black ice reportedly contributed to a multiple-injury wreck on Cabbage Hill involving 7 commercial vehicles and 13 passenger cars.

UMATILLA COUNTY, OR — Nine people were taken to hospital Saturday night following a 20-car pileup on Interstate-84's westbound lanes in Eastern Oregon's Umatilla County.

The complex multi-vehicle collision occurred just after 6 p.m. March 3, according to Oregon State Police officials, who further noted speed and black ice as contributing factors to the snowy Cabbage Hill crash.

The domino effect created by the initial crash ultimately disabled seven commercial vehicles and 13 passenger cars near milepost 223 in the Deadman's Pass area Southeast of Pendleton.

Five of the nine people taken to hospital were said to have serious injuries. They were taken by Life Flight and ambulance to St. Anthony's in Pendleton and theKadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington.

The Oregon Department of Transportation did not reopen I-84's westbound lanes until 8 a.m. March 4.
