The resident told fire investigators they were home when they heard the smoke alarm sound off in another room in the house. When they checked to see what was happening, they found the room on fire, officials said.

Using a fire extinguisher and water, the resident tried to battle the fire but was unable to get it under control before it grew too large. The resident was able to escape without injury, but their cat was killed.
