Pedestrian Safety Operation In Oregon City This Week
The operation to raise awareness of Oregon's pedestrian safety laws will be held this Friday at the intersection of 7th and John Adams St.

OREGON CITY, OR β Officers in Oregon City this week will conduct a pedestrian safety operation on Seventh Street to raise pedestrian safety awareness and ensure all drivers and pedestrians are familiar with the state's pedestrian laws.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 6, officers will setup at the intersection of Seventh and John Adams streets near the Oregon City library. Using pedestrians who will act as specific decoys for the operation, officers will look for drivers and other pedestrians showing unsafe behaviors.
During a similar 4-hour operation in August 2017, officers conducted 43 traffic stops and issued more than 60 citations at the same intersection.

Warning signs will be posted around the area notifying drivers and walkers of the upcoming operation. Specifically, police hope to remind the community that "motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross, or are crossing the roadway," in accordance with Oregon Revised Statute 811.028.
A pedestrian is crossing the roadway in a crosswalk when any part or extension of the pedestrian, including but not limited to any part of the pedestrianβs body, wheelchair, cane, crutch or bicycle, moves onto the roadway in a crosswalk with the intent to proceed.
The operation is being funded by a grant from Oregon Impact, formerly known as the Clackamas County DUII Impact Panel, which in 1998 became a nonprofit trying to "expand efforts to increase safe driving by reducing driving under the influence from a primarily intervention focus to an emphasis on prevention," according to OregonImpact.org.
