How Much Do You Know About Salem?
Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Salem so special.

Salem is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Salem has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Salem was dubbed the “Cherry City of the World” in 1907. The nickname came after the capital produced an outstanding display at the 5th annual convention of the Pacific Coast Association of Nurserymen.
- Film aficionados may recognize Salem as the backdrop of some popular movies. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Bandits” were both filmed in picturesque Salem.
- Deepwood Museum & Gardens is a historic Queen Anne-style Victorian house on a five-acre public park. Formerly known as the Historic Deepwood Estate, was built by Dr. Luke A. Port in 1894.
- Salem’s Bush House Museum has a haunting reputation. The 1870s-era home has reported paranormal activity including apparitions, disembodied voices, shadow figures and more.
- Minto-Brown Island Park spans 1,200 acres in Salem. The park is larger than New York’s Central Park and even has 30 acres designated for off-leash dogs to roam.
