Here are the top three stories in Salem today:
- Salem police have apprehended a 15-year-old suspect accused of stabbing a man at the Salem Center Mall and then fleeing the scene on Friday afternoon. According to detectives, the suspect and the victim were involved in an altercation, leading to the police's arrival on the mall's second floor just before 12:30 p.m. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a local hospital; his current condition remains unknown as of the time of publication. The minor suspect, whose identity will not be released, is currently detained at the Marion County Juvenile Department. (KOIN.com)
- On Thursday, over 100 advocates from various organizations gathered outside the Capitol building in Salem to demand that lawmakers return to work during the current legislative session. The group, which included members from Basic Rights Oregon and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon, also called for the passage of House Bills 2002 and 2005, which focus on reproductive rights and gun violence prevention, respectively. Despite meetings between Democratic and Republican leaders on Thursday and Friday, no resolution to the boycott has been announced yet. (KOIN.com)
- The Salem Art Association is seeking volunteers to assist with the Salem Art Fair & Festival, running from Jul. 21-23 at Bush's Pasture Park. Volunteers are needed for a variety of shifts and types of work before, during, and after the fair weekend. - If you received a call regarding an air quality or bottled water survey with a City of Salem caller ID, please note: these calls are not coming from the City. If you receive a call and aren't sure of its legitimacy, officials advise asking for the caller's name and department, then asking to be routed to the correct individual or department (available online).
