City Seeks Input on Developing a Publicly Owned Fiber Optics Network

The city is currently evaluating whether to leverage existing assets and potentially expand its fiber optics network to all residents.

City of Wilsonville officials are seeking public input on a proposed plan to invest in developing a publicly owned fiber optics network for residential and commercial users.

They are currently assessing whether the community has a need for and supports the investment to create a network that offers high-speed Internet connections with large data bandwidth, as well as how to fund and build the service.

An online survey remains available through Jan. 31, according to the city's website. It asks a variety of questions about existing services in the community, priorities and gaps. Business managers and residents are encouraged to field the inquiries and visit an online open house to share their feedback.

To lead the analysis, the city contracted with CTC Technology and Energy (CTC), a nationally recognized technology-consulting firm in Maryland with more than 30 years of experience with public and nonprofit entities. CTC is responsible for researching, recommending and drafting the analysis for the City Council’s consideration and potential adoption in Spring of 2017.

More than 50 communities in 19 states currently operate a publicly owned network offering high-speed Internet with at least 1 gigabit service, according to the Institute for Local Self Reliance. Localities often have often supported these networks so residents and local businesses have the option of faster Internet service and increased bandwidth. High-speed fiber-optic networks can also serve as an economic development incentive to attract high-tech and other types of companies to a city or region, Wilsonville officials said.
