WILSONVILLE, OR — Tony Daniel Klein was a nurse at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville when he sexually assaulted at least a dozen women. That's according to a federal indictment handed down on Monday.

Klein, who lives in Estacada, first got his nursing license in 2010. As of Tuesday morning, it was still active. After leaving Coffee Creek, he was hired by Legacy Health where he is on administrative leave.

The Department of Justice says that from 2016 through 2017, "Klein committed various forms of sexual assault, some of which included aggravated sexual abuse and some resulting in bodily injury."

Coffee Creek, where prosecutors say that the assaults took place, is Oregon's only women's prison.

The Washington County District Attorney had investigated the allegations against Klein without bringing any charges.

In 2019, 10 women sued Klein and the state corrections department, charging that Klein had sexually abused them.

The state settled the lawsuit, paying out around $1.75 million. The settlement did not require Klein or the state to admit wrongdoing.

On Monday, the judge agreed to let Klein remain free pending trial. Klein was ordered to surrender his passport and not leave the state without permission.
