ABINGTON, PA — Pennsylvania's executive secretary of education, Deb Carrera, was scheduled Tuesday to visit a COVID-19 booster clinic at Abington High School, the administration of Gov. Tom Wolf announced.

Carrera's visit, which is supposed to happen around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week approved the Pfizer vaccine booster for children ages 12 and older.

"The Pennsylvania Department of Education has been visiting school vaccine clinics across the commonwealth since the vaccines were approved for children, and we are continually impressed by the turnout at these events," Carrera said in a statement. "Now that our young learners are able to access this free, safe, and effective vaccine, they can continue learning in the classroom without additional disruptions."

Abington School District administrators say Tuesday's program is the 11th such COVID-19 vaccine clinic to have been held here.

"Vaccination is one of the best tools we have in maintaining a healthy school community, while keeping students and teachers in classrooms," Abington School District Superintendent Jeffrey S. Fecher said in a statement. "We appreciate the partnership of Eric's Rx Shoppe in supporting Abington School District in these efforts."

Eric's Rx Shoppe is the local pharmacy that partnered with Abington for the vaccine clinic, and whose staff are the ones administering the booster shot for those who participate.

State officials say that the Department of Health is working to ensure that the COVID-19 vaccine is being provided in a way that is ethical, equitable and efficient across the commonwealth.
