ABINGTON, PA — A student-athlete from Penn State Abington has been named a semifinalist for a national award that recognizes top amateur baseball players from across the country.

Ryan McCarty, an infielder who also pitches for the baseball team at Penn State Abington, is in the running for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award, which is a competition for the top amateur baseball player of the year.

The school said that McCarty is the only non-NCAA Division I player and the only Penn State University player to be nominated for the accolade.

Fans have the ability to vote for McCarty through the Golden Spikes Award process, which runs through June 6.

The 44th Annual Golden Spikes Award will be given out on June 24 and aired on ESPN.

McCarty, who recently finished up his senior season playing baseball for Penn State Abington, found himself the center of media attention when local press wrote about his performances on the baseball field.

The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote about McCarty as did KYW News Radio in a recent report.
