PENNSYLVANIA - The first measurable snow of the season could come this weekend for some Pennsylvania towns, forecasters said.

Following a mostly sunny Friday and Saturday, temperatures are set to dip into the upper 20s to mid 30s Saturday night, with precipitation slated for Sunday morning across the entire state, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain is in store as part of the "mini" storm system set to hit Pennsylvania this weekend, according to AccuWeather, though a wintry mix along and north of the I-78 corridor “can’t be ruled out" on Sunday, the National Weather Service said. Measurable snow totals between 1 and 3 inches are also expected for the Poconos and northwest New Jersey.

“Rain will be expected for the rest of the forecast areas,” the National Weather Service added in a Friday morning forecast discussion. “Lows Sunday night will end up near freezing for most, but in much of the area, that won't be until after the threat of precipitation has largely ended.”

The Philadelphia area is expected to see rain Sunday between 2 and 8 p.m., with new precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible during the storm.

Slippery roadways wet with wintry slush will still create potential issues for motorists Sunday night into Monday morning, AccuWeather added, especially for motorists traveling into Philadelphia, those driving on stretches of I-80 and those around I-81 over the higher terrain of northeastern Pennsylvania.

As of Friday morning, five Pennsylvania counties have been issued a hazardous weather outlook by the National Weather Service due to the possibility of accumulating snow, the agency said. The affected counties are:

  • Tioga
  • Bradford
  • Wyoming
  • Lackawanna
  • Luzerne

"A low-pressure system will bring a chance for accumulating snow to the area Saturday night through Sunday night," the agency said in the outlook. "Total accumulations of 1 to 3 inches will be possible, with higher totals in the higher elevations. Snow may stick to road surfaces, resulting in slippery conditions."
