Bucks counted 40.8 percent voter turnout in this election, or 193,694 ballots cast out of 475,049 registered voters.

DiGirolamo, the Republican incumbent, has been mayor since 1994. He is once again running for re-election in 2021. He is known in part for his Towns Against Graffiti program, the Transportation Management Association, and advocacy for new slot and table games at the Parx Casino.

Valerie Ridge, the Democrat, is concerned about deteriorating businesses and vacant properties in the township, and wants to improve Bensalem's infrastructure of code enforcement. She also wants to make Bensalem more eco-friendly, she said in her candidate profile with Patch.

"It is my belief that we need to return to basics and what make sense for the community as a whole," Ridge wrote. "It is important that [the] office of the Mayor be a representation of all the residents and a voice to all."

One of Main's primary campaign agendas was toward financial transparency and fiscal responsibility. He also expressed concern about the length of DiGirolamo's mayorship in his Patch candidate profile.

"As a Bensalem resident of the last twelve years, I felt now was the best time to have a new voice heard in the political arena," Main, the Libertarian candidate, wrote. "I also wanted to show the people of Bensalem that they have a choice, outside of the duopoly, at the municipal, county, state, and national levels."
