Heat, Humidity Lingers; Charter School Gets Planning Review

We are expected to get a break from the 90-plus degree heat on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are forecast to go no higher than the mid-80s with a decent chance for some thunderstorms during the course of the day.

But the relief may be short-lived and perhaps not very relieving. WFMZ forecasters say we go back above 90 on Tuesday, and the humidity lingers for days beyond that. Channel 69's daily forecast for the week reads: "Muggy, Sticky, Muggy, Sticky, Muggy, Sticky." Icky.

The Bethlehem Planning Commission meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in Town Hall to consider plans to build a new home for the Charter High School for the Arts at Third and Polk streets in South Bethlehem.

The plan has proven to be somewhat controversial if only for the state’s promise of a $3 million economic development grant for the project, which has been objected to by the Bethlehem Area School District. School Board President Mike Faccinetto has argued that charter schools already take too high a share of tax dollars away from public education.

The commission will also be discussing a proposed amendment to the city’s zoning law that would govern any proposed demolition of historic buildings outside of the neighborhoods that get oversite from the Historic Architectural Review Board or the South Bethlehem and Mount Airy Historic Conservation Commission.

Your kids can learn about science in a fun way at the Bethlehem Area Public Library this week with the The Bugs of Blackwood, who experiment with fire, gas, air pressure, water and chemicals to rescue their friend Benjamin.

This science with a story program is presented by Piccirillo Sciencetelling at the Main Library. A second show is scheduled for Thursday, July 11 at 6:30 at the South Side Branch, 400 Webster Street.

On Wednesday, take the kids to see Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs for a free showing at the Levitt Pavilion at SteelStacks, starting at 8 p.m.

Tickets are still available for what probably will be one of the best rock n’ roll shows to come to Bethlehem this year. And it’s happening Wednesday night at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center.

Los Lobos, one of the greatest bands to come out of the East L.A. rock scene in the 1980s, is the featured attraction. Openers are Alejandro Escovedo and Los Lonely Boys, best known for their Top 40 hit, “Heaven.” The music is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
