Police: SouthSide Man Fired Pistol at Neighbors

A South Bethlehem man is accused of firing a stolen gun at neighbors on Wyandotte Street, then lying to police about his identity early Sunday, according to court records.

Shelton Powell, 38, of 744 Wyandotte St., allegedly fired multiple shots over the heads of three people on the porch of 705 Wyandotte St. about 3 a.m., according to an arrest warrant.

The victims told Bethlehem police that they heard the bullets whizzing past their heads. Powell then retreated into his home, the court record says.

Police subsequently found a bullet hole in a neighboring home at 707 Wyandotte St., which caused damage to the home’s siding.

Police obtained a search warrant for Powell’s home and, as a result, found a pistol that had been reported stolen, the affidavit said. Powell also at first allegedly gave police a false identification.

Powell was charged with felony counts of receiving stolen property and discharging a firearm into an occupied structure. Police also charged him with three counts of recklessly endangering another person, providing a false ID to law enforcement, criminal mischief and discharging a firearm within city limits.

Powell was arraigned before on-duty District Judge Roy Manwaring and committed to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $200,000 bail.
