Juveniles Accused of Shoplifting Lead Police on Foot Chase

Both were found and taken into custody.

A 15-year-old girl from Canonsburg and a 16-year-old boy from Muse are accused of stealing from the Dollar General on Pike Street—and leading borough police on a foot chase Friday.

Canonsburg police had received a call from Dollar General officials Friday night about a report of shoplifting.

When officers then spotted the pair at the McDonalds restaurant at 100 Bobby Vinton Boulevard, they recognized the girl because she was wearing an Angry Birds backpack—the same as the person in the surveillance video footage viewed at Dollar General.

But upon seeing police, both the boy and girl ran, leading police on a foot chase that led officers over the hillside beside McDonalds toward the Wendy’s restaurant, according to a report.

While an officer apprehended the girl there, the boy continued behind the Wai Wai restaurant, where police lost sight of him.

Officers from Cecil Township and North Strabane Township responded to the scene for backup, and the boy was eventually found hiding in ductwork behind the nearby Hog Father’s restaurant.

Both were then taken to the Canonsburg police station, where the girl’s backpack revealed numerous items allegedly taken from the Dollar General store—including snacks and other merchandise.

Charges will proceed in juvenile court, a police report indicates.
