Station Square Owner To Renovate Freight House Shops, Build Apartment Complex

Station Square owner Forest City Realty Trust plans new Freight House Shops eateries and 315 apartments.

Station Square’s Freight House Shops, which have attracted shoppers and diners for nearly 40 years, soon could get a makeover. Forest City Realty Trust, which owns the destination spot on Pittsburgh’s South Side across the Monongahela River from Downtown, plans a significant redevelopment of Station Square, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Jim LaRue, Forest City asset manager, told the newspaper the company planned to make structural improvements to open up space in the Freight House Shops. Forest City also is considering bringing in new dining options. The shops currently are home to restaurants such as Houlihan’s, Kiku, Melting Pot and Buckhead Saloon.

Forest City hopes to begin the renovations either late this year or early in 2018.

A Freight House shops renovation wouldn’t be the only significant change at the landmark location. Forest City officials on Tuesday briefed the Pittsburgh Planning Commission on previously announced plans for a $60 million, 315-unit apartment complex in a parking area on the eastern side of Station Square.

The project includes two five-story buildings that also will have a retail component.
