Five Things to Know Today: March 3

Girl Scouts have a fundraiser at Emmaus Pizza Hut today.

1.  Weather: Cooler today, according to the National Weather Service, with a high of 33 and a North wind between 6 and 10 mph. Sunrise is at 6:33 and sunset at 5:55, which gives us about 2 minutes and 39 seconds more daylight than yesterday.

2.  Meetings: Willow Lane PTO meets at 7 p.m.; Emmaus Public Works Committee meets at 3 p.m. in Borough Hall, and Upper Milford Supervisors meet tonight night at 7:30 p.m. and will discuss the Vera Cruz sewer project.

3.  In Case you Missed It: Turnpike officials had speculated that it might be easier to close Mill Road in Vera Cruz rather than do the extensive renovations to accommodate the Turnpike widening project around it. But Upper Milford Planners recommended this week it remain open because there is no other easy access to that part of the township.

4.  Coming Up: Girl Scout Troop 6294 has a fundraiser at Emmaus Pizza Hut today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. They are raising money to send cookies to the troops overseas. Print the coupon and use it in the store and 20 percent of the total of your order will go to the Girl Scouts.

5Today in History: On this day in 1991, robbery parole Rodney G. King stops his car after an 8-mile pursuit by police through Los Angeles. When King was slow to respond to police orders to get on the ground, they shot him with two Taser guns. That’s when civilian George Holiday, standing on the balcony of his apartment, video taped 89-seconds of King being verbally abused and physically beaten by police. The tape was broadcast on CNN, igniting three days of violence that left 50 people dead and 2,000 injured.
