Council OKs Beer Tent at October Family Weekend
Beer drinkers can celebrate the fact that the suds will likely flow at a tent in Dewey Fire Company's parking lot during the planned Family Weekend Oct. 19-20.

The suds will likely be flowing at Dewey Fire Co. during the Oct. 19-20 Family Weekend that will be held in conjunction with the 4-County Firemen's Parade, after Hellertown Borough Council approved a motion to suspend an ordinance that bans outdoor drinking during the event.
The suspension will only apply to Dimmick Park, which is adjacent to the fire company, and the fire company must still obtain permission to host the beer tent from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB).
Councilman Richard Staffieri expressed concern about whether allowing the beer tent could set a precedent and invite other groups to petition for alcohol sales at their events, but even if that would occur, borough council solicitor Michael Corriere said "every case is different, so you can decide."
Councilwoman Gail Nolf said the beer sales will not set a precedent, since the fire company hosted a beer truck with taps on it in its parking lot a number of years ago.
During the Family Weekend, a number of events are planned in Dimmick Park, including a concert by the Allentown Band at 6 p.m. Saturday.
A tentative lineup of other events is posted on the Saucon Valley Spirit website.
