Saucon Valley Senior Receives Donley Award

High school senior Garrett Powell is the recipient of a 2012 Donley Award. The annual awards honor students for their community service, academic excellence and leadership.

Saucon Valley High School senior Garrett Powell was one of a handful of local students to receive a prestigious Donley Award April 16, the Express-Times reported.

The awards, which are named for former Air Products chairman Edward Donley, recognize Lehigh Valley high school students who have achieved , demonstrated leadership and served their communities.

A total of 29 students--representing most of the public and private secondary schools in Lehigh and Northampton counties--were honored at a ceremony at the Best Western in Hanover Township, Northampton County, the article stated.

Donley himself was on hand to present each student with his or her award.

Powell was profiled by Patch last fall in a story about his skill as an athlete.

In addition to his prowess on the soccer field, Powell is vice president of his senior class, a member of the National Honor Society and in Saucon Valley's pit orchestra and jazz band.

He told Patch that he plans to enroll in an engineering-related course of study at a four-year college, and that his favorite subjects are math and science.

Powell is also active in a social justice group at Assumption BVM Church in Colesville, Upper Saucon township.
