Hatfield Police Will Take Part In Nationwide Drug Takeback Program On October 23

The Hatfield Township Police Department will be a host site for a national drug takeback program later this month.

HATFIELD, PA — The Hatfield Township Police Department announced that it will be taking part in a nationwide prescription medication collection day at the end of the month.

The department said it would be serving as a collection site on Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, a program sponsored across the country by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Police say they are focused on removing potentially dangerous narcotics and controlled substances from medicine cabinets and homes.

The nationwide initiative provides an opportunity for members of the public to surrender expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceuticals, controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for proper and safe destruction, the Hatfield Police Department announced.

"This one-day effort is intended to bring national focus to the issue of pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse," the department wrote on its Crime Watch webpage.

During the drug takeback event, Hatfield police will be accepting various pharmaceuticals along with liquid products and creams in their original containers. Sharpies, auto-injectors and syringes and needles will not be accepted due to the hazards related to blood-borne pathogens, the police department said.

Any type of illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine will not be included in this takeback initiative and individuals who are looking to surrender such substances should contact law enforcement personnel as this material will be considered abandoned property and handled in accordance with departmental policy, police announced.

The drug takeback event will be held at the Hatfield Township Administration Building, which is located at 1950 School Road in Hatfield.
